Uganda is an amazing country. The people all have warm smiles and greet everyone with an enthusiastic “You’re welcome!” This morning was a bicycle trip to a local school where we helped mud or actually re-mud a wall. Due to the torrential rain storm this morning that lasted about 4 hours, it was actually the perfect day to add a little extra water to the mud pit (created by termites!), stomp around with our feet and then form an assembly line of mud balls, to then throw handfuls against the back wall of the school... Something surprisingly fun and totally messy! We also helped administer de-worm medication to children at the same school and an additional school later that morning. The children here are not shy or hesitant with us, and readily clung to us the minute we arrived. Our kids all immediately engaged them in play and it really seemed like a celebration for all involved... even if the kids were being “de- wormed” in the process.
Teatime was out of the back of the truck with warm chapati and ginger tea, and then back to Maggie’s guest house for lunch.
In the afternoon we went to another village to begin repairing their borehole (well.) They had been without their well for almost 7 months, and it is common for them to break frequently. It is the village’s responsibility to raise half of the funds for the new piping as well as provide some working hands.... our team supplied the rest of the funding and then was also there for the work. What a rewarding and fun afternoon, as our children all laughed and danced around together, the women stood under the shade of the tree taking turns holding the babies, and the men worked to restore the village well to working order! We were sweaty, sunburned and satisfied by this full day!
